매년 7월 18일은 넬슨 만델라의 생일이자, UN이 지정한 넬슨 만델라의 날이다. 지금 이 블로그의 첫 글은 넬슨 만델라 데이와 관련된 글이었다. 어느덧 블로그 운영도 1년이 넘어가나보다, 당시 구글의 두들(Doodle)이 넬슨 만델라를 주제로 되어있어 소개했었다. 올해 넬슨 만델라 데이에는 따로 두들로 나오지 않았다. 그때 글은 여기.
남아프리카공화국은 특별한 역사적 경험을 가지고 있다. 아파르트헤이트라는 인종 갈등의 역사를 가지고 있음에도 불구하고, '화해'를 통해 '무지개 국가'를 건설하려하였고, 어느정도 그 무지개를 만들어 낸 것 같다. 얼마전 미국의 동성결혼 합헌이 크게 보도되었다. 미국은 동성결혼을 허용하는 스물한번째 국가이며, 남아공은 다섯번째 국가다. 최근 제노포비아로 인해 그 이름이 퇴색되었긴 하지만, 남아공의 시도는 분쟁을 겪고 있는 많은 나라들이 배울 수 있는 점이 많다.
넬슨 만델라의 날을 나름 기념하고자, 영화를 한편 보았다. 이 날 선택한 영화는 2009년 영화, '인빅터스(Invictus)'
인빅터스는 '정복당하지 않은 자'라는 뜻이다. 남아공의 럭비대표팀 '스프링복스'와 넬슨 만델라에 엮인 이야기를 담고 있다. 럭비는 아파르트헤이트 시절, 인종 차별을 상징하는 스포츠였다고 한다. 넬슨 만델라가 대통령으로 당선 된 이후, 흑인들은 럭비대표팀 스프링복스를 해체하려고 시도했지만, 넬슨 만델라는 이에 반대하고 오히려 스프링복스에 더 관심을 쏟고, 이들이 진짜 국가대표팀의 위상을 가질 수 있도록 지원했다. 그 결과 남아공에서 열린 1995년 럭비월드컵에서 이들은 우승을 했고, 흑인과 백인을 넘어, 국가가 하나되는 경험을 만들어 낸다. 아래 영상은 실제 스프링복스가 럭비 월드컵에서 남아공 흑인의 저항정신을 담은 노래에서, 새로운 남아공의 국가가 된 Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika(God Bless Africa)를 부르는 장면.
우리나라의 전 모 전 대통령처럼 스포츠를 정치적으로 활용한 사례는 많지만, 남아공 럭비팀의 사례는 특별하다. 이 영화의 내용이 대부분 사실이라면, 넬슨 만델라의 철학이 고스란히 담겨있는 사례라고 봐도 될 것 같다. 만델라는 영화의 제목처럼 Invictus다. 아파르트헤이트 시절, 많은 박해를 당했고, 백인들에 대한 분노를 가지고 살았겠지만, 그가 자유를 얻고, 남아공을 이끌게 되었을 때, 그 분노에 정복당하지 않았다. 오히려 박해 당했기에 할 수 있는 '용서'를 중심으로 남아공이 분쟁으로 빠지는 것을 막았다.
갈등하는 두 주체가 평화로운 상태로 가는 방법은 단 하나다. '화해'. 하지만 사과와 용서 사이에서 길을 잃는 경우가 허다하다. 우리나라만 봐도 일본의 화해 문제로 오랜시간 갈등을 겪는 것을 볼 수 있다. 넬슨 만델라는 그를 지지한 수많은 사람들이 복수를 원하고, 그들이 기득권이 되는 시대를 원했음에도, 자신의 철학을 밀고 나갔다. 아마도 넬슨 만델라는 '정의'나 '평등'보다 더 큰 가치가 '평화'라고 생각하기 때문이었을 것이다.
이 영화, 캐스트가 화려하다. 클린트 이스트우드 감독, 넬슨 만델라 역에 모건 프리먼, 럭비팀 주장 역에 맷 데이먼까지, 대단하다. 특히 모건 프리먼의 넬슨 만델라는 정말 진짜같다. 럭비가 주제지만, 럭비를 하나도 몰라도, 아파르트헤이트나 넬슨 만델라에 대해 조금이라도 들어보았다면 아주 감동적으로 볼 수 있는 영화다.

Your Majesties, Your Highnesses, Distinguished Guests, Comrades and Friends:
Today, all of us do, by our presence here, and by our celebrations in other parts of our country and the world,confer glory and hope to newborn liberty.
Out of the experience of an extraordinary human disaster that lasted too long, must be born a society of which all humanity will be proud.
Our daily deeds as ordinary South Africans must produce an actual South African reality that will reinforce humanity's belief in justice, strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul and sustain all our hopes for a glorious life for all.
All this we owe both to ourselves and to the peoples of the world who are so well represented here today.
To my compatriots, I have no hesitation in saying that each one of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld.
Each time one of us touches the soil of this land, we feel a sense of personal renewal. The national mood changes as the seasons change.
We are moved by a sense of joy and exhilaration when the grass turns green and the flowers bloom.
That spiritual and physical oneness we all share with this common homeland explains the depth of the pain we all carried in our hearts as we saw our country tear itself apart in a terrible conflict, and as we saw it spurned, outlawed and isolated by the peoples of the world, precisely because it has become the universal base of the pernicious ideology and practice of racism and racial oppression.
We, the people of South Africa, feel fulfilled that humanity has taken us back into its bosom, that we, who were outlaws not so long ago, have today been given the rare privilege to be host to the nations of the world on our own soil.
We thank all our distinguished international guests for having come to take possession with the people of our country of what is, after all, a common victory for justice, for peace, for human dignity.
We trust that you will continue to stand by us as we tackle the challenges of building peace, prosperity, non-sexism,non-racialism and democracy.
We deeply appreciate the role that the masses of our people and their political mass democratic, religious, women, youth,business, traditional and other leaders have played to bring about this conclusion. Not least among them is my Second Deputy President, the Honourable F.W. de Klerk.
We would also like to pay tribute to our security forces, in all their ranks, for the distinguished role they have played in securing our first democratic elections and the transition to democracy, from blood-thirsty forces which still refuse to see the light.
The time for the healing of the wounds has come.
The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come.
The time to build is upon us.
We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation. We pledge ourselves to liberate all our people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination.
We succeeded to take our last steps to freedom in conditions of relative peace. We commit ourselves to the construction of a complete, just and lasting peace.
We have triumphed in the effort to implant hope in the breasts of the millions of our people. We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity - a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.
As a token of its commitment to the renewal of our country,the new Interim Government of National Unity will, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of amnesty for various categories of our people who are currently serving terms of imprisonment.
We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines in this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed in many ways and surrendered their lives so that we could be free.
Their dreams have become reality. Freedom is their reward.
We are both humbled and elevated by the honour and privilege that you, the people of South Africa, have bestowed on us, as the first President of a united, democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa, to lead our country out of the valley of darkness.
We understand it still that there is no easy road to freedom.
We know it well that none of us acting alone can achieve success.
We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world.
Let there be justice for all.
Let there be peace for all.
Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
Let each know that for each the body, the mind and the soul have been freed to fulfill themselves.
Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.
