탄자니아를 연구주제로 삼은 외국 학자들을 좀 조사해 보았다. 사실 Susan Geiger라는 분은 국적에 대한 단서가 전혀 없어서 확신이 안서긴 하지만 중요한 분이기도 하고 이름이 전혀 탄자니아 사람 이름이 아니라서 일단 목록에 포함시켰다.

Afropop Worldwide와의 인터뷰를 보면 Askew교수가 어떻게 아프리카 음악에, 그것도 탄자니아의 타랍 음악에 관심을 가지게 되었는지 들어볼 수 있다.
피아노를 일곱살때부터 고등학교까지 쳤었죠. 제 고향인 캘리포니아의 예술학교를 다녔고, 예일대학교에서 음대를 다니며 계속 해나갔어요. 대학교에서 저는 인류학 공부를 하며 제 인생에 두번째로 사랑할 수 있는 것을 찾았고 음악과 인류학, 제가 사랑하는 두가지를 합칠 수 있는 방법을 찾기로 했어요. 그렇게 찾은 것이 '민족음악학 (ethnomusicology)'이었어요.
저는 결국엔 탄자니아에 가게 되었어요, 왜냐면 제가 예일대학교를 다녔기 때문이에요. 예일 대학교에는 아주 훌륭한 아프리카학 과정이 있었고, 비록 제 관심은 서 아프리카였지만 학교에선 스와힐리어를 가르쳐 주었어요. 학교의 스와힐리어 과정은 그냥 흘려버리기엔 너무 아까웠고, 동아프리카엔 인도 사람들이 있었어요. 그래서 처음에 연구 주제를 '동아프리카의 인도 음악'으로 잡고 어떤 흥미로운 결합과정이 있는지 살펴보려고 했어요. 하지만 대학 3학년때 여름 과정으로 아프리카를 처음 가 보고서 그곳의 인도 공동체는 음악에 관해선 굉장히 순수주의(purist) 성향을 가지고 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있었죠. 그들은 행사를 위해 음악가들을 외부에서 초빙했고, 음악은 그들에게있어서 그들이 공동체로써 차별성을 가질 수 있도록 하는 하나의 방법이었어요. 그래서 저는 1987년 방문에서 알게된 타랍(taarab) 음악에 관심을 가지게 되었죠. 타랍 음악은 스와힐리 해안의 음악이구요, 서양, 인도, 중동 가릴 것 없이 모든 음악적 영향에 포용적인 음악이었어요. 온갖 다른 음악적 전통의 혼합물처럼 말이에요.
