엘리멘트리 시즌 3, 8화의 제목은 End of Watch 입니다. 어디서 익숙한 문장이라고 생각했는데, '왕좌의 게임'에 나이트워치들이 하는 대사에서 많이 언급되었던 것 같네요. 이번 에피소드에 나이트워치가 나오는건 아니지만 NYPD가 순찰도중 살해당하는 사건이 발생하고 셜록과 키티, 왓슨은 이 사건 해결을 위해 활약합니다.

동시에, 셜록은 자신이 중독치료모임에서 했던 발언을 그대로 옮겨놓은 블로그 때문에 화가나는데요, 그 블로그 자체는 또 다른 중독자들의 치료를 위해 했기 때문에 나쁘지 않지만, 그럼에도 안된다고 하는 셜록과 키티의 대화를 옮겨보았습니다.
Kitty: What's the problem? "You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear." "It is stupidity rather than courage to refuse to recognize danger when it is close upon you." What is all this?
Sherlock: It, Kitty, is me.
Kitty: Didn't know you were that into birds.
Sherlock: The blog is not mine, but the quotes are. I might not be cited, but they're taken from things that I've said in meetings.
Kitty: Someone's been writing down what you say and posting in here? That's against the rules, isn't it?
Sherlock: It would appear that the thief's intenthion is to help other addicts. They think that the things that I've said can be applied to other's quests for sobriety. I support the premise, but not the practice. Anonymity is a cornerstone of the program.
Kitty: You are very quotable, you know.
Sherlock: A facility for quotation covers an absence of original thought.
Kitty: You just did it again.
셜록이 자신의 말을 인용해놓은 블로그에 반대하는 이유를 두가지 말합니다. 첫번째는 중독치료모임은 익명성에 기반해있다는 것이고, 두번째는 인용의 기능이란 생각없음을 숨기는 것이기 때문이라고 말합니다.
누군가의 말을 인용하는 것은 내가 스스로 생각하고 말하는 것 보다 훨씬 쉽습니다. 하지만 종종 인용을 인용으로만 그쳐 내 생각은 없이 인용문만 덜렁, 마치 내 생각인냥 내놓기도 하지요. 아마도 셜록은 그런 인용을 지적한 것 같습니다.
